This is how I started out "kiddy drill"

Start with the kid at the net and you on the opposite side, up to ten feet away. Call this Level One. You will hit as close as possible to the kids racquet so that he/she can make an easy volley. You should be careful to hit well to the side or above the kid's head, so that when he/she misses, they won't get a ball in the face. Stand closer together if this helps with gentleness and accuracy. the kid should try to make the ball bounce between the net and you.
