Ankylosing Spondylitis

What is Ankylosing Spondylitis?
Ankylosing Spondylitis or Bechterew's disease as it is also known is a form of arthritis that effects the spine and sacroiliac joints. Pain and stiffening effect the sacroiliac joint area and spine. The vertebral arches and ligaments in the spine gradually ossify (turn to bone) causing the joints to fuse.

What are the symptoms of Ankylosing spondylitis?

  • Stiffness and pain in the morning effecting the sacroiliac joint area and spine.
  • Aching in the lower back which can disrupt sleep.
  • Pain radiating down the legs and into the groin.
  • Other symptoms may include recurrent eye inflammations and over time, an increased kyphosis or curvature of the upper spine.

Ankylosing spondylitis usually effects young men under the age of 30 and progresses burning itself out over a 20 year period. There is no known cure. Seventy five percent of men who suffer from ankylosing spondylitis also have chronic inflammation of the prostate gland and around 20% have intestinal inflammation. In women 80% are thought to have intestinal disease problems.

What can the athlete do?

  • Reduce stress of the effected joints by resting, reducing training workload or changing the type of sport or training done.
  • Avoid rapid twisting movements.
  • Avoid letting the painful areas and muscle groups getting cold. A heat retainer may be of benefit.
  • See a doctor for further advice.

What can a doctor or physiotherapist do?

  • Do a blood test to confirm diagnosis.
  • Prescribe exercises and physiotherapy to maintain good mobility and posture and counteract the stiffening of the spine.
  • Prescribe anti-inflamatory medication.
